ABC Houston July and August Safety Courses

1. OSHA 511—Occupational Safety and Health Standards for General Industry: This course covers the OSHA standards, policies, and procedures in general industry. Topics include scope and application of the OSHA General Industry Standards, general industry principles and special emphasis on those areas in general industry which are most hazardous. Upon course completion students will have the ability to define general industry terms found in the OSHA General Industry Standards, identify hazards which occur in general industry, locate and determine appropriate OSHA General Industry Standards, policies, and procedures, and describe the use of OSHA General Industry Standards and regulations to supplement an ongoing safety and health program.

2. OSHA 500—Trainer Course in OSHA Standards for the Construction Industry: This course is designed for individuals interested in teaching the OSHA 10- and 30-hour construction safety and health Outreach Training Program to their employees and other interested groups. Using OSHA Construction Standards as a guide, special emphasis is placed on those topics required in the 10-and 30-hour programs as well as those which are most hazardous. Students are briefed on effective instructional approaches and use of visual aids and handouts. This course allows the student to become a trainer in the OSHA Outreach Training Program, to conduct both 10-and 30-hour Construction Outreach classes, and to issue cards to participants after verifying course completion.

3. OSHA 2264—Permit-Required Confined Space: This course covers the safety and health hazards associated with permit-required confined space entry. Course topics include recognition of confined space hazards, identification of permit and non-permit required confined spaces, use of instrumentation to evaluate atmospheric hazards, ventilation techniques, developing and implementation of a confined space program, proper signage, and training requirements. This course features workshops on permit entry classification, instrumentation and program development.

4. Excavation Safety Training for Competent Persons: United Rentals’ Excavation Safety Training for Competent Persons has been designed by professional trainers to meet OSHA standard 1926 subpart P requirements for excavation oversight.
This course covers OSHA standard 1926 subpart P as it relates to:
· Soil classification
· Sloping and benching
· Timber shoring
· Aluminum hydraulic shoring
· Requirements for protective systems
· Manufactured tabulated data
· Site specific engineering
· General requirements and competent person responsibilities
All participants will receive a Course Manual and Certificate of Course Completion.

5. United Rentals’ Confined Space Entry Training is geared toward the underground utility industry, this course focuses on creating a safe environment for workers, as outlined in OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.146 and 29 CFR 1926 subpart AA.
This course covers the 29 CFR 1910.146 and 29 CFR 1926 subpart AA standards as it relates to:
· Identifying permit requirements for confined spaces
· Use of gas monitoring equipment
· Proper ventilation of confined spaces
· Alternate entry procedures
All participants will receive a Course Manual and Certificate of Course Completion.

1. SH 801—Enhancing Safety Performance with Behavioral Safety: Current Trends in BBS: This course is designed to provide participants with a thorough understanding of Behavior-Based Safety and begins with the evolution of BBS including the underlying principles, common myths and halftruths. Emphasis is given to lessons learned from experience and research. Long-term goals for BBS are identified along with proven steps organizations can take that lead to safety excellence. Participants will learn how to develop observation and feedback skills, how to use behavioral data to improve performance, ways to handle common barriers, and strategies to motivate employee safety performance. Current trends in BBS will be analyzed, including how to sustain a BBS process and keep it fresh. Case studies will be utilized to illustrate both successful implementations and lessons learned.

2. OSHA #510- Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the Construction Industry: This trainer course is designed for personnel interested in teaching the OSHA 10- or 30-Hour General Industry Outreach courses. Special emphasis is placed on required topics in the OSHA Outreach Program. Various instructional approaches and the effective use of visual aids and handouts will also be covered. Course participants will work in groups or independently to practice their presentation of selected topics. (Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop to work on presentation materials.) Written and performance examinations are given during the course. Successful completion of the course and the final examinations allow the participant to be recognized as an OSHA Authorized Outreach Trainer for General Industry.
