Nonfarm payroll employment in June increased by 213,000, seasonally adjusted, from May and by 2,374,000 (1.6%) year-over-year (y/y), the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported today. The unemployment rate edged up to 4.0% from 3.8% in May. Construction employment rose by 13,000 for the month and 282,000 (4.1%) y/y to 7,222,000 (the most since May 2008 but 7% below the June 2006 peak).

Nonresidential construction spending inched 0.1 percent higher on a monthly basis in May, according to an Associated Builders and Contractors analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data released today. Spending, which totaled $749 billion on a seasonally adjusted annual rate for the month, is up 3 percent from the same time last year.

Even though data on construction spending shows volatility, the trend is "solidly up" in the United States. That's one of the major takeaways from numbers released by the Commerce Department this week, which you can see here.

As we have previously posted, most of the attention in the 3D printing world has been focused on the printing of houses in Dubai and China, the additive manufacturing for autos, medical implants, all prototypes for the future. The growth of 3D printing in the AEC industry, while still in its infancy, is finding its way into some interesting places.

Many companies today face an age gap as they plan for leadership succession. There are not enough people in the historic replacement age range (40-55) to fill the spots being vacated by the retiring baby boomers, now in their 60s and early 70s. Consequently, there is a need to accelerate the development of younger high potentials, so they can take on senior leader responsibilities.

Housing starts in May increased 5.0% at a seasonally adjusted annual rate from the April rate and 20% from the May 2017 rate, the Census Bureau reported on Tuesday. Single-family starts rose 3.9% for the month and 18% year-over-year (y/y).
