A Sustainable Workforce Starts With You

Reshaping the Construction Industry

After many hours of hard work, it appears the discussions surrounding the principles of the Construction Career Collaborative (C3) have successfully shifted to the equally hard work of shaping the practices to deliver a sustainable workforce to the region. With the list of engaged owners, C3 projects and Accredited Employers continuing to grow, the collaborative is now focusing on increased time and energy on generating data and metrics that reinforce the need for craft workers who are skilled, safe and committed to the career they have chosen.

Disney World in Orlando might seem to be a strange place for a conversation about Workers' Compensation in Texas, but it was the right setting for a recent conversation I had with a man who, like me, was looking for a bright sunny spot in the morning cool to sit while his grandkids rode a nearby ride. I found out how serious the lack of Workers' Compensation is on jobs other than construction.

One of the challenges of establishing the credibility of the C3 formula for success has been the difficulty in collecting data that illustrates the value of craft training. When we began to collect the data that makes the case for craft training, we found an outstanding example from Chamberlin Roofing & Waterproofing, one of the C3 Accredited Employers.

A group of college students from Auburn spent their spring break this year travelling to the Houston area from Alabama to volunteer on work crews repairing homes damaged during Hurricane Harvey last August.  Midway through their week of work, they were taken on a field trip to learn more about how the flooding during Harvey occurred and to visit an active construction jobsite.

Johnny Torres, a Construction Technology student at JB Hensler College and Career Academy, knew from a young age that he wanted to build. Inspired by his father, who made a career out of the skilled trades and was always working on interesting projects around the house, Johnny immediately took to Legos.

Discovering meaningful data can be powerful and provocative. Gaining access to The Perryman Group’s projections for the Greater Houston Partnership (GHP) and the traditional FMI “Construction Put in Place” report provided such an energizing experience. The blend of these insightful documents, which cover the exact same geographic area, unleashes fact-based optimism and stimulates many questions for all contactors and construction-related firms.
