ASA Houston

Kerrick Whisenant, the president of the American Subcontractors Association, in his February newsletter to the membership, told of a meeting recently held in his offices with a group of ASA leaders who were asked to take a look into the future of the industry.  This is his account of that meeting and the findings.

“The ASA Rap Council – ASA ‘s ‘think tank’ that develops innovative ideas for consideration by the association – took up the difficult but fascinating challenge of ‘peering into the future’ last month while meeting at my company’s offices in Alabama.  Here is what members of the council foresee for the next 10 years:

• Differences between high-end and low-end specialty trade contractors increase, as high-end is quality/skill-driven and low-end is price-driven.  

Another Excellence In Construction (EIC) awards event in the books!  For the past 15 years, the American Subcontractors Association – Houston Chapter (ASA-HC) has presented companies and individuals in the architectural, engineering, and construction industry awards for excellence.

Unlike many of the construction industry awards given, ASA-HC’s awards are based on the business practices and the working environment created by general contractors and architects on projects in the Houston area.  ASA-HC believes that this relationship-based type of awards program recognizes those in the construction industry who understand and embrace building as more than just a business; that construction is the daily lifeblood for tens of thousands of individuals in the Houston area employed by the construction industry and for the millions of Houstonians and visitors who work, play and worship in what the industry creates.   Read more »

It is Oscar season and while this wasn’t the event itself, last Friday night members of the Construction Citizen team attended the ASA-Houston Chapter’s 15th Annual Excellence in Construction Awards in Houston.  The annual ceremony is held to recognize those outstanding companies and individuals in 8 categories: General Contractor of the Year, Architect/Engineer of the Year, General Contractor Safety Award, Project Manager of the Year, Project Superintendent of the Year, Project of the Year Over $15 Million, Project of the Year between $5-$15 Million, and Project of the Year Under $5 Million.   Read more »

On November 17th, the Houston Chapter of the American Subcontractors Association held its monthly membership luncheon at the HESS Club.  The topic for the meeting was a panel discussion covering the Construction Career Collaborative (C³) initiative.  Panelists were Peter R. Dawson, AIA, Senior Vice President, Facilities Services, Texas Children’s Hospital; Joe Savala, Associate Vice President, Facilities Administration, The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center; Jim Stevenson, CEO, W.S.
