Last week the Construction Education Foundation of North Texas (CEF) hosted 1500 students from 43 high schools at their sixth annual Build Your Future Career Day. Industry leaders and educators work together each year to make this event a great way to grow the future workforce by promoting the many career opportunities in the construction industry.
The high school juniors and seniors from region 10 and 11 in the north Texas area were led in groups of 12-15 students throughout the CEF complex where they were exposed to different crafts, exhibits, and employment opportunities available in the construction industry. Over 80 industry volunteers helped out at the event by hosting exhibits, providing hands-on interactive activities, cooking hot dogs, and administering a Craft Championship Competition.
Those who have attended or volunteered at this event in the past know that there had previously been a guest speaker who inspired the students while they gathered all at once for a designated lunch break. This year the format was changed so that the lunch break was shorter and staggered between the groups, allowing the students more time to see the exhibits and participate in the hands-on activities.
Marek Dallas Division President John Hinson currently sits on the CEF Board. He said,
“Build Your Future Career Day presents an alternative for the 80-85% of students in high schools who will not pursue a college education through traditional academic venues. CEF works in conjunction with North Lake College to offer these options.”
