There’s no better time to work in the construction industry than now. With a growing skilled workforce shortage, salaries remain high and career opportunities are plentiful. Earlier this year, NCCER released its annual Construction Craft Salary Survey, which lists the average annual salaries of craft professionals from industrial and commercial construction firms across the country.
For as high as these salaries are, the reality is that what skilled craft professionals earn is typically far greater. The salaries listed in NCCER’s survey are average base salaries, not including overtime, per diem, bonuses or other incentives. [node:read-more:link]
A shortage of skilled labor along the Gulf Coast inspired global engineering construction company Fluor to open a craft training facility near Houston, where students are trained at no cost to them.
“Congratulations, you have been selected to be a part of the team! Your starting date will be….”
There are no sweeter words than these that I’ve heard in the eight months I scratched and clawed, typed, copied and pasted my instrument and electrical technician resume and work applications day after day. Of course, with some breaks in between as I focused on school, I prepped myself to get back into the workforce. After getting settled in, signing paperwork, and completing training modules, it is finally time to get moving!
One word came to mind as I put on my hard hat and safety goggles after completing my training modules: Planning. If you fail to plan, plan to fail.
As I start my day, I go into my emails and check to see what is lined up for the day. Whether it be PMs (preventative maintenance), specific projects, such as replacing a valve, or completing company training modules, the day starts off by planning. [node:read-more:link]
Construction and Maintenance Education Foundation (CMEF), a training affiliate of the Associated Builders and Contractors of Greater Houston, honored 44 graduates in millwright, instrumentation, pipefitting, industrial painting and sheet metal at a graduation ceremony on Thursday, June 5. More than 200 people, including graduates, guests, instructors, managers, and industrial owners filled the banquet hall to applaud the students’ accomplishments.
Ceremony guest speakers offered industry advice, but also praised the students in their career choice. Pat Kiley of Kiley Advisors said, “Every facet of construction is on fire,” when he referred to the volume of career options these graduates have before them. [node:read-more:link]
