Last month, I visited Lone Star College North Harris (LSC-North Harris) and spoke with Erica Jordan, Executive Director of Career and Technical Education about the skilled trades training programs at LSC and about the Construction and Skilled Trades Technology Center which is currently being constructed on that campus.
In her office on the Lone Star College-Tomball campus, Jordan advises students and works with representatives from the industry to advise them of potential hires which are coming out of the LSC programs and what particular skill sets each of them have.
Jordan works with a variety of programs offered by Lone Star College, including their Allied Health programs, Construction Trade programs, ATCP (Alternative Teacher Certification Program), and FastTrack non-credit programs. [node:read-more:link]
Adaptive Construction Solutions Inc., located in Houston, Texas, recruits, trains and integrates veterans into the ironworking industry.
Adaptive Construction Solutions, which opened its doors in April, completed its first three training classes, providing more than 70 veterans with introductory ironworking training and careers with notable Houston steel erection companies like Empire Steel, Steelco and Postel International.
We have fostered quick success, growth and expansion by creating a culture of camaraderie and “can-do” attitude that attracts veterans and employers alike. Educators, industry representatives, family, and friends of the CMEF class of 2016 gathered last Thursday evening to celebrate the achievements of this graduating class of construction craft professionals. The Construction and Maintenance Education Foundation (CMEF) hosted the event for those of us who braved the local thunderstorms at a unique event hall nestled between branches of the Buffalo Bayou on the southeast side of Houston called Brady’s Landing.
After a brief introduction by Mike Holland, CMEF Board of Directors Chair and Marek Houston Division President, the evening began with a stirring presentation of the United States Colors by the Deer Park High School JROTC (Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps). Following the United States Pledge of Allegiance, the room bowed their heads during an invocation delivered by Rick Rankin, an industry representative from Jacobs.
We were then invited to fill our dinner plates at the ample buffet, allowing the CMEF graduates and the National Craft Championship competitors in attendance to precede us.
Russell Hamley, ABC/CMEF President, then recognized the sponsors of the evening’s festivities, including the host sponsor CMEF, the training affiliate of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Greater Houston. [node:read-more:link]

According to recent reporting in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the 71,000 seat stadium for the Falcons and the 32,000 configuration for the Atlanta soccer team is now scheduled to open in June of 2017 after delays for additional structural design for the “oculus” roof and the panoramic video screens.
