A Sustainable Workforce Starts With You

Reshaping the Construction Industry

The American media and the politicians from the President of the US down to the local elected officials and law enforcement officials are involved in the issue, which, like construction is complex and in the end, very personal.

There were 210,000 job openings in construction, not seasonally adjusted, at the end of November (up from 178,000 in November 2016), BLS reported on Wednesday in its latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) release. This was the largest November total since the series began in 2000. The industry hired 256,000 employees in November, very close to the November total in each of the previous 10 years

Construction associations are among the business groups this year encouraging employers and their employees to get out the vote in the Texas primary elections. They and others are stressing that in Texas, the vast majority of the state-level races are actually decided by voters in the March primary while the November elections are often just an afterthought.

C3’s primary goal of creating a skilled and sustainable craft workforce can only be accomplished by construction employers successfully competing for talent with other industries, something the industry has struggled to do in the last 30+ years. C3 is working with companies in the commercial construction industry to attract young people into a career in the craft trades. These employers must demonstrate to new applicants that they can provide new craft professionals with a career path that enables them to earn a comfortable living and provides them the opportunity to fulfill their personal dreams.

Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta has been called “the world’s greatest stadium.” The 71,000 seat stadium was built for the Atlanta Falcons. Reports from the first games in the new facility show that one thing is for certain, as we previously posted last year, the structural engineering used to design and erect the ocular roof is a feat to marvel about.

It may be hard to believe, but Apple’s iPhone was launched ten years ago, in 2007. Rarely has one product generated so much innovation in mini-computers, texting, social media, cell phone technology, cameras, weather forecasts, storm tracking, and the ability to hail an Uber driver. The iPhone gave rise to thousands of apps, competitors and entirely new industries.

The past year was a tough one when it comes to the issue of worker misclassification. For about a decade, there was some significant progress in state legislatures across the nation voting to crack down on the problem. It's an issue across industries and is particularly problematic in construction. With a few exceptions, 2017 did not see many new efforts to enforce the law.
