The index "is a monthly measure of the first (or initial) report for nonresidential building projects in planning, which have been shown to lead construction spending for nonresidential buildings by a full year.

In response to the Harvey flood, the third “500-year flood” in the last 5 years, the Commissioners “unanimously approved” a new set of rules that would require buildings to be built higher than the 500-year floodplain versus the current “100 year” level and would require some homes to be elevated as high as 8 feet above grade in order to avoid future flood damage.

A broader and more streamlined crackdown on worker misclassification is coming in Louisiana, where the state’s workforce commission is beefing up efforts to deal with the problem in 2018. The Louisiana Workforce Commission says the Government Against Misclassified Employees Operational Network, or GAME ON initiative, is “a unique task force found only in Louisiana.”

Detailed figures on Census's construction spending website show that commercial spending segments exhibit a wide range of growth patterns. Warehouse construction leaped 37% YTD as the mini-storage component has roughly doubled for four years in a row. Shopping mall construction increased 29% YTD and shopping center construction grew 20%.
